X-TALK #03: CONSTRUCTING EDUCATION CITY

A growing collection of architectural icons and landmarks in Qatar

With every new program established under Qatar Foundation, a new piece of architecture is added to Education City – a growing collection of contemporary architectural icons and landmarks in Qatar. Since the inception of Qatar Foundation in 1995, the physical development that accompanied the organization’s growth constituted an ambitious ever-expanding project. In this talk, Ameena Ahmadi will give an overview of the incredible efforts that are shaping Education City and its masterplan and architecture, along with some glimpses of future plans.

All events are free and open to the public.

Ameena Ahmadi

Architecture Manager

Capital Projects Directorate

Qatar Foundation

Ameena Ahmadi currently holds the position of Architecture Manager at Qatar Foundation’s Capital Projects Directorate where she started her career in 2005. Ameena is involved in the overall design management and development of Education City’s master plan and buildings. She has also been an active member of the Doha Architecture Forum, an informal association with the aim of creating an intellectual platform and establishing a critical discourse on architecture and the built environment in Doha. She participates as a critic in architecture programs both at Qatar University and Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.

Ameena has also been working with a dedicated and multidisciplinary team from QF for over two years on QF’s Karama Initiative, with the goal of positively transforming standards of quality of life for workers involved in existing and future QF activities from the time they are recruited until their job in Qatar comes to an end. The ambition is to set an example of ethical treatment of workers that could be adopted nationwide. As a result of this initiative, QF launched the QF Mandatory Standards of Migrant Workers Welfare for Contractors and Sub-Contractors in April of 2013, and a full time department for workers welfare was established under QF HSSE Directorate. Ameena continues her role as a member of the Working Committee for the initiative and in liaising with national and international stakeholders for the same goal.

Ameena holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the American University of Sharjah, 2005 and a Masters of Science in Advanced Architectural Studies from University College London, 2008.
